Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels in the retina, the light sensing layer at the back of the eye. This is called diabetic retinopathy, and it is a leading cause of vision loss in working age adults. In its early stages there are usually no symptoms at all.
Dr. Atalie Liu, our optometrist, and our ophthalmologists provide yearly diabetic eye exams and can share the results with your primary care doctor or endocrinologist.
Why yearly exams matter even when you see well
Retinopathy can leak fluid into the center of the retina (diabetic macular edema) or grow fragile new blood vessels that bleed, sometimes before you notice any blur. Treatments such as injections and laser work best when started before vision drops, and good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol slows the disease.
When to be examined
- Type 2 diabetes: at diagnosis, then at least once a year
- Type 1 diabetes: starting 5 years after diagnosis, then once a year
- Pregnancy with diabetes: before or early in pregnancy, with follow up as advised
- If retinopathy is found: more often, as your doctor recommends
What we check
A dilated retina exam, and when needed, OCT imaging of the macula and retinal photos. If we find retinopathy that needs treatment, we coordinate your care with a retina specialist.
Diabetes and other eye problems
People with diabetes are also more likely to develop cataracts at a younger age and have a higher risk of glaucoma, so a yearly exam checks for these as well. Blurry vision that changes from day to day can also come from blood sugar swings.
Common questions
My vision is fine. Why do I need a diabetic eye exam?
Diabetic retinopathy usually causes no symptoms until it is advanced. A yearly dilated exam finds changes early, when treatment is most effective.
Will my medical insurance cover a diabetic eye exam?
Diabetic eye exams are usually billed to medical insurance. Our staff can check your benefits before your visit.
Can you send the results to my doctor?
Yes. Let us know the name of your primary care doctor or endocrinologist and we can share the report.
